Introduction to Microneedling

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to promote skin rejuvenation.  It's also known by names such as Dermapen, or Skin Pen, however these are simply the names of brands of microneedling pen. By creating micro-channels in the skin’s surface, microneedling helps stimulate collagen and elastin production leading to younger looking, healthier skin. It also helps to treat scarring, pigmentation and wrinkles. At Skin Redefined, we are insured to microneedle at medical depths. This creates enhanced results with issues such as scarring, wrinkles and loose skin. We also use a range of advanced topical serums targeted to your skin concerns that are pushed into the deeper layers of the skin during the procedure where the effect is much greater than when applied to the surface.

How Microneedling is a low risk option for skin rejuvenation

During a professional microneedling session, tiny needles create controlled micro-injuries, triggering the body’s natural cell turnover and skin tightening processes. When the body tries to heal a wound, it will flood the area with an increased blood supply in order to heal the area. We see this as redness and possibly mild swelling initially. But what is happening at a microsopic level is an increase in hyaluronic acid, collagen, elastin and a faster rate of cell renewal. This method is often compared to laser procedures, but many find microneedling vs. laser treatments to be gentler with minimal downtime. In fact, some patients notice microneedling results after the first session, although multiple treatments are usually recommended for the best results.

Microneedling in darker skin tones

One of the most common questions we hear is, “Is microneedling safe for all skin types?” In most cases, yes—this facial treatment is suitable for a wide range of skin types and tones. In fact, it is one of the safest treatments for hyperpigmentation of darker skin tones such as Fitpatrick types 4 and above. However, we always recommend a consultation with our skincare specialist, Nurse Kelly Whittaker to determine the best course of action for your unique needs.

FAQ's

What causes hyperpigmentation?

Pigment in the skin is produced by cells caused Melanocytes. These cells reside in the Epidermis and Dermis of the skin. A healthy Melanocyte will steadily release granules of pigment into our skin, this is what gives our skin it's natural colour. However, in response to injury, it can malfunction and produce excess pigmentation. The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is sun damage. Repeated sun exposure and exposure to free radicals causes DNA damage to our skin cells. This causes the Melanocyte to over work, and continue to produce excess pigment even without sun exposure. This may appear as lots of freckles, or defined age spots, perhaps even widespread dark patches of skin.

Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by some kind of trauma to the skin, eg a spot, a cut, graze or in response to a treatment that has been performed on the skin. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause, and those on HRT and hormonal contraception may also experience patches of excess pigmentation known as Melasma. This is usually indicated by a symmetrical pattern of pigment across the face.

How does microneedling help treat Hyperpigmentation?

Microneedling helps to break up the fragments of pigment which are then shed by the body as the skin layers get replaced. Your practitioner may add targeted serums to reduce and clear pigment which are pushed into the skin as part of the procedure.

How effective is microneedling for Hyperpigmentation?

Microneedling can be a very effective treatment for Hyperpigmentation, but requires a dual approach with a prescribed skincare routine to enhance and maintain your results long-term. We use the Award-Winning AlumierMD Skincare range alongside all of our treatments to give you skin to be proud of.
